As an IB Candidate School*, we follow the IB Primary Years curriculum for our Early Years Programme (PK1 and PK2). We aim to provide the children on our Early Years Programme with the educational experiences that develop a positive approach to learning. Our Early Years students have their own separate block in our main school building, where we provide a learning environment where students feel at home and are able to explore new concepts and ideas – both in English and in French.
The Early Years Programme acknowledges the uniqueness of each child. We see each child as intelligent, resourceful and creative individuals who grow, develop and learn at different rates. At SISQ, our early learners explore their environment and learn through play with their classmates and teachers. They are natural inquirers and love to explore and ask questions. The Early Years Programme builds on this natural curiosity. SISQ’s dedicated and experienced teachers ask questions and set up play scenarios and activities that challenge our students in their thinking and decision making.
Academic and social learning are integrated, helping our early learners to achieve independence, self-confidence and a sense of responsibility. With a small teacher to student ratio, children receive plenty of individual care and attention. This programme develops a strong foundation for children as they continue on to the Primary Years curriculum in Grades 1 to 5.
Early Years (PK1 AND PK2)
Through the Early Years children develop a strong feeling of belonging as they develop self-confidence and emerge into independent learners. An emphasis is placed on fostering independence, imagination, creativity and learning through inquiry and hands-on activities through 4 units of inquiry. Teachers draw from a plethora of teaching strategies including, circle work, activity centres, cookery, Art and construction in order to stimulate language learning and number readiness. The 2- voice model of language learning is implemented in this phase.
Each class has a French speaking learning assistant. The children learn to adapt to the two languages as they begin to differentiate the languages spoken whilst making solid connections to their learning. In addition all children participate in Arabic language instruction.
The teaching team utilises both the inside and outdoor spaces to create exciting experiences for our youngest students.
Kindergarten (KG1 and 2)
The progamme gently begins to blend into a more solid academic foundation maintaining stimulating surroundings and creative opportunities. Children study through 6 units of inquiry. Daily language learning focuses on speaking and listening, oral expression, reading skills, spelling, word and sentence writing, and handwriting. Math is taught from a visual and conceptual approach using manipulative resources. Mathematical vocabulary is emphasized and topics covered include problem solving, classification, measures, pattern and shape, all taught alongside computation with a focus on addition and subtraction. Children receive a daily French lesson.
