IB Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate's Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed to meet the educational needs of students between the ages of 12 and 16. It is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.

The Programme aims to provide a broad, traditional foundation of knowledge while increasing the student's awareness of the relationships between all subjects and areas of learning. Students are encouraged to question and evaluate information critically, to seek out and explore the links between subjects, and to develop an awareness of their place in the world. Intercultural awareness and communication skills are seen as essential elements to education in the modern world and are fundamental to the MYP’s philosophy.

The eight subject areas within the IB Middle Years Programme:

  • Language Acquisition
  • Language and Literature
  • Individuals and Societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Arts
  • Physical and Health Education
  • Design

The IB Middle Years Programme aims to explore the following themes:

  • Identities and Relationships
  • Personal and Cultural Identity
  • Orientations in Space and Time
  • Scientific and Technical Innovation
  • Fairness and Development
  • Globalization and Sustainability

MYP students also complete a long-term project, where they decide what they want to learn about, identify what they already know, discovering what they will need to know to complete the project, and create a proposal or criteria for completing it. An integral element of the programme is also service and action, and students are encouraged to make a positive difference to the lives of others and the environment through the MYP Community Project.

Students who complete this five-year programme will develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world, and are well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme (DP).

At SISQ, students who join the IB MYP* will join the Secondary School and benefit from a single-sex learning environment. To learn more about the Secondary School and the proven advantages of a single-sex education please click here.

*SISQ is a Candidate School to offer the IB Middle Years Programme, and is currently pursuing authorisation as an IB World School. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes visit http://www.ibo.org.
